North and South London Cares awarded first grants
North London Cares and South London Cares are sister charities that aim to tackle issues such as isolation, dislocation and loneliness through matching young professionals with local older people in one to one relationships and group activities.
North London Cares and South London Cares were awarded ÂŁ1,986 each through the Give London initiative in early August. These funds have allowed them to make 12 new one to one matches between volunteers and older neighbours through their Love Your Neighbour programme. These friendships are lifelines for some of their particularly isolated older neighbours.
They’ve also been able to hold 135 social clubs (including parties, brunches, pub outings and visits to parks and galleries) and held their first gardening project, mobilising volunteers to improve their older neighbour’s gardens.
Dorothy, 85 recently shared her feelings about her Love Your Neighbour friend Angela: “As you get older you don’t know what younger people are like. You feel like you bore people because you're older. But I look forward to those days when Angela’s coming over, I did feel very lonely and I’ve been trying to fill up my time. It's just lovely and I'm so glad to know her. She's like one of the family."
